Rare Books
Macao Public Library house a collection of approximately 40,000 rare books, including Chinese and Western texts published before 1950 which are located at the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library and the Senado Library. The ‘Chinese Ancient Books Chamber’ (a rare- collections building) at Sir Robert Ho Tung Library currently has some 20,000 Chinese rare books, of which 16 are precious rare books from the Jiaye Book Library Tower previously collected by renowned modern bibliophile Liu Chenggan. Among these 16 books, the Manuscript of Siku Quanshu’s Synopsis by Weng Fanggang is of intrinsic value. Moreover, the Senado Library houses a collection of approximately 20,000 foreign ancient texts, varying from the 16th to 20th Century historical documents of the Portuguese presence in the Far East to literature of Portugal’s policy in its overseas colonies.
Rare Book Recommendations
在庇山耶（1867- 1926）藏書中，我們發現有多本法國文學作品，當中以“詩”的文體為最多，有10本法國象徵派詩人魏爾倫的詩集，每兩本合釘成一本。本書是Les poètes maudits 和 Les Mémoires d'un veuf 合釘在一起。
保爾·魏爾倫（Paul Verlaine，1844 - 1896）是法國象徵派詩人的表表者。他除了寫詩之外，還有寫散文。1884年出版Les poètes maudits（被詛咒的詩人）是他對當代6位詩人的介紹：Tristan Corbière、Arthur Rimbaud、Stéphane Mallarmé、Marceline Desbordes-Valmore、Villiers de l'Isle-Adam 和他本人。對魏爾倫來說，“被詛咒”意指自小被社會誤解、獨行獨斷、叛逆、挑釁、反社會、自我毀滅（酗酒吸毒）但有才華，在世時未被重視的象徵主義詩人。他對每位詩人都很熟識，所以載有鮮為人知的軼聞趣事。
另一本Les Mémoires d'un veuf （鰥夫回憶錄）在1886年出版，是詩人以34篇散文記載巴黎的風景、鄉村的生活點滴。他透過細膩的筆觸，將他放蕩的生活、溫柔記憶、私人恩怨，譜出一篇篇幽婉柔媚、調皮諷刺的小品。同時也載有詩人對當時“巴納斯詩派”（Parnasse）文學作品的評論。“巴納斯詩派”是19世紀下半葉法國詩壇上“反浪漫主義”的一個詩派，反對“浪漫派”詩人過度抒情。巴納斯詩派主張態度客觀、立論嚴謹、技藝完美，其創作內容最初取材於當代社會生活，後轉向神話、史詩、異域傳說及古文化等。
葡萄牙文學界將庇山耶定為象徵主義詩人，他在1890 年10月修讀法律系時和1908年8月的書信中，都提到他受到魏爾倫的詩詞影響。庇山耶和他的詩集《滴漏》可提供不少象徵主義的意象。在魏爾倫、蘭波等人的詩歌中的關鍵字：墳墓、魂靈、屍體、廢墟、沙漠；落日、秋冬、生病、蒼白、哭泣等等。它們構成了詩人心靈的圖譜，反映出他們的苦悶、頹靡和抑鬱的精神病狀，其根源來自“自我”與世界的對立以及無法解決的矛盾。
庇山耶和魏爾倫的人生和詩作都有很多相似的地方，在日後的書介中會更進一步介紹。
