Rare Books
Macao Public Library house a collection of approximately 40,000 rare books, including Chinese and Western texts published before 1950 which are located at the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library and the Senado Library. The ‘Chinese Ancient Books Chamber’ (a rare- collections building) at Sir Robert Ho Tung Library currently has some 20,000 Chinese rare books, of which 16 are precious rare books from the Jiaye Book Library Tower previously collected by renowned modern bibliophile Liu Chenggan. Among these 16 books, the Manuscript of Siku Quanshu’s Synopsis by Weng Fanggang is of intrinsic value. Moreover, the Senado Library houses a collection of approximately 20,000 foreign ancient texts, varying from the 16th to 20th Century historical documents of the Portuguese presence in the Far East to literature of Portugal’s policy in its overseas colonies.

《諺語叢話》是由一位在漢口的英國循道會（Wesleyan Missionary）William Scarborough牧師所編譯。他將一些中國民間流傳的常用語和有教育意義的俗語翻譯成英文，按英文主題名稱的字母順序分成：因果、動物、商業、家庭、教育、笑話、運氣、悲與喜、語言、衙門律例、人、行為、醫學、道德、謹慎、五倫、宗教、時令節氣、旅行 及貧富等20個主題。
作者在前言說明，編譯本書時，他參考了多本關於中國道德修養和啟蒙教材的書籍，當中包括：元末明初輯錄儒、釋、道三教學說及有關聖賢個人品德修養、安身立命的勵志典籍《明心寶鑑》；明嘉靖時期集詩文詞賦、俚語俗諺、導人悟出豁達樂觀的人生，勸人安分隨時，諫人淡泊名利、勿縱物欲的《解人頤》；明萬曆年間談人及人際關係、命運、如何處世讀書的《增廣賢文》；明末清初以家庭道德為主的啟蒙教材《朱柏廬治家格言》；滿清康熙皇帝為訓諭世人守法和為人者應有的德行而頒的《聖諭十六條》；康熙年間匯集人情世事、修身齊家的《家寶全集》；以及強調現世的因果報應觀念，從家庭、社會人際倫理關係出發的生活準則《太上感應篇》。
作者同時參考了多本外國人出版過的相關題材著作，包括第二任港督戴維斯爵士（Sir John Francis Davis, 1795-1890）於1823年所著的Chinese Moral Maxims；法國神父童文獻 （Paul Hubert Perny, 1818-1907）在1869年所著的《中國俗語》Proverbes Chinois；美國傳教士盧公明（Justus Doolittle, 1824-1880）於1872年所著的Vocabulary and Handbook of the Chinese Language。
除了參考以上的種種書籍外，書中還介紹了他從個人累積的經驗中得到的生活體會。他希望透過這本書，讓傳教士學懂華人常用的格言、警句和有教育意義的俗語後，可以更得心應手地表達其意思，從而促進雙方的了解，使傳教事業更加事半功倍！
