Editor’s Note

In Qian Zhongshu’s novel Fortress Besieged he wrote: ‘Those who are outside want to get in, and those who are inside want to get out.’ Some writers seek the soil of creativity elsewhere but inspiration is in fact nearby, and even outsiders are attracted to exploring the city. This edition of Books & The City introduces five novels themed around Macao penned in Chinese, English and Portuguese.

Macao Library Week 2015 to be held this month features a number of brilliant events; for example, Taiwanese writer and literary critic Yang Zhao will share his acquisitions from the literary world. Additionally, ten libraries in our city will host activities revolving around different themes to keep every field connected to reading. Taipa Library will operate on a trial basis this month – it will be the largest library in Macao, allowing families to share the delights of reading.

Not until everybody slows down his pace may one find the urban landscape enchanting.
