Sitting next to the busy Avenida do Almirante Lacerda, the Red Market Library looks modest in contrast with the nearby Red Market, but it is never short of readers based on nighttime observations by our reporters on site. Thetrial round-the-clock service is suitable for residents of the town living in hustle and bustle.
Inside, people read under soft lights as if they were living in a vast world of their own, utterly undisturbed. The Library provides self-help facilities like the photocopier and the Self Check Machine which enable readers to borrow and return books themselves. Though the Multimedia Room is closed during extended opening hours, Wi-Fi Access Service remains available at the time.
The Library features food and cookery readings because of its proximity to the Red Market, with pure literature, tourism and leisure, medication, healthcare and domestic science publications being another part of its collection. The Library received an average of 750 visitors every day before the service extension. It will keep monitoring the visitor inflow during the trial 24-hour operation and decide on the library’s future service hours based on the referential information.
The Red Market Library was renovated from a post office branch, of which the nostalgically warm and red postbox is still in use, with the mailman collecting mails from it on a regular basis. The postbox is of parochial historic and cultural value, as it carries the memories of how locals shared information in the old days. The 24-hour Library has passed down the tradition of information sharing, allowing more people to indulge in the magnificent world of culture and knowledge.
