Japan      Kanazawa Umimirai Library

The architectural structure of Kanazawa Umimirai Library is a huge cube, with the four walls pitted with 6000 holes. This kind of design not only effectively absorbs the impact of earthquakes on the walls of the building, but also allows sunlight and air to penetrate into the library through the holes. 25 pillars stand among the bookshelves, making the whole area similar to a forest of books.

Kanazawa Umimirai Library has adopted an automated shelving system to facilitate reading while improving the efficiency of book search. In addition, there are even reading rooms and meeting rooms with the purpose of promoting exchange of ideas among different users and turning the library into a community centre for citizens.
