Preference Book Station

The new Preference Book Station at Nam Van Lakeside assembles a considerate diversity of books, disseminating all kinds of wisdom and knowledge. Book lovers are welcome to visit the newly opened Book Station and seek out books they like.

Situated in the new art zone Anim'Arte Nam Van, the Preference Book Station, operational since June, has hosted ‘Book Exchange’ and ‘Bookcrossing’ events to enable readers to experience the fun of reading. “The annual ‘Book Exchange’ activity of Macao Library Week has been enthusiastically received by readers, so Macao Public Library has decided to continue the event in this new space,” said Lo Chi Keong, head of the Division of Reader Services and Promotion of Department of Public Library Management. Adopting the same process used in Macao Library Week in past years, readers can receive scores for the books submitted and use them to exchange books from other readers.

Readers can also participate in ‘Bookcrossing’, whereby they can pick a book from the bookcrossing box and write down their feelings and reviews on the card attached to the book after reading and put the book back at Preference Book Station for further bookcrossing. For example, a reader can write down their travel experience on the Bookcrossing card attached to a travel book to share their feelings with the next reader.

“It is meaningless for a book to stay on the shelf after being read. To this end, the library also launched an event themed ‘Forgotten Books’ in the past to recommend good books that haven’t been checked out to enhance their circulation,” commented Lo Chi Keong. To manifest the mobility of books, books on display at Preference Book Station are irregularly replaced so that readers may encounter different books of interest whenever they visit the library.

Preference Book Station has been established in the newly developed art space at Nam Van Lakeside. Aside from enjoying coffee and canoeing, residents can also pick a book to read. Lo is convinced that Preference Book Station will help generate a cultural aura in the area – ‘families can play leisure activities near Nam Van Lake or quietly read a book’.

‘Book Exchange’ and ‘Bookcrossing’ activities at Preference Book Station will end in October. However, the idea of ‘Bookcrossing’ will be introduced to some larger public libraries in order to provide more Bookcrossing locations in Macao to facilitate the flow of knowledge.
