Rare Books
Macao Public Library house a collection of approximately 40,000 rare books, including Chinese and Western texts published before 1950 which are located at the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library and the Senado Library. The ‘Chinese Ancient Books Chamber’ (a rare- collections building) at Sir Robert Ho Tung Library currently has some 20,000 Chinese rare books, of which 16 are precious rare books from the Jiaye Book Library Tower previously collected by renowned modern bibliophile Liu Chenggan. Among these 16 books, the Manuscript of Siku Quanshu’s Synopsis by Weng Fanggang is of intrinsic value. Moreover, the Senado Library houses a collection of approximately 20,000 foreign ancient texts, varying from the 16th to 20th Century historical documents of the Portuguese presence in the Far East to literature of Portugal’s policy in its overseas colonies.

作者伯多祿在本書的前言介紹了《教話指南》（Bussola do dialecto cantonense : adaptado para as escolas portuguesas de Macau）的由來。本書原是美國傳教士尹士嘉（Oscar F. Wisner, 1858 - 1947) 1906年在廣東出版的粵語教材----《教話指南》（Beginning Cantonese）。
尹士嘉原為美國加利福利亞州牧師，1895年被傳道萬國總會任命為監督，1899年被派來廣州，1899-1903年間擔任格致書院（Canton Christian College）監督。其後格致書院脫離教會，改名為嶺南大學。未幾，因義和團起義，學校被迫遷至澳門，更名為嶺南學堂。1903年至1907年間，暫居澳門，擔任校長的尹士嘉與伯多祿一起交流，分享教授外國人學習漢語的經驗。
1907年，伯多祿終於爭取到在澳門各官辦葡文學校設立中文課程，（登於《澳門公報》1907年3月22日第30 號訓令），他積極為葡童編寫了多本漢語學習課本。Bussola do dialecto cantonense : adaptado para as escolas portuguesas de Macau 是他翻譯自尹士嘉的英文版《教話指南》（Beginning Cantonese）的葡文譯本。
原英文版《教話指南》是用蝴蝶裝，分上下兩冊：上冊是尹士嘉撰寫的31頁導論，講解如何教授粵語；下冊是一本載有75課全中文的粵語課本，內附三個附表和一個勘誤表。這套書經伯多祿翻譯後也分為兩冊：一冊是75課中文直排的課本（Texto chinez da bussola do dialecto cantonense : adaptado para as escolas portuguezas）；另一冊共297頁是針對葡童的需要將75課的內文全部譯成葡文（Bussola do dialecto cantonense : adaptado para as escolas portuguesas de Macau）。他將每一課的單字，加入拼音及解釋，再翻譯每個詞語、短句和對話成葡文。
《教話指南》兼具方言教材與方言辭書的性質，為當時學習粵語的主要課本。在葡文版《教話指南》的一個附錄中說明，伯多祿在1910年起被委任負責三校（葡文小學、利宵中學、葡文商業學校）的中文課程主任。他選用了《教話指南》作為利宵中學三年內的課本（相等於中文學制的三年初中）。由此可見他相當重視這本課本！
