Rare Books

Macao Public Library house a collection of approximately 40,000 rare books, including Chinese and Western texts published before 1950 which are located at the Sir Robert Ho Tung Library and the Senado Library. The ‘Chinese Ancient Books Chamber’ (a rare- collections building) at Sir Robert Ho Tung Library currently has some 20,000 Chinese rare books, of which 16 are precious rare books from the Jiaye Book Library Tower previously collected by renowned modern bibliophile Liu Chenggan. Among these 16 books, the Manuscript of Siku Quanshu’s Synopsis by Weng Fanggang is of intrinsic value. Moreover, the Senado Library houses a collection of approximately 20,000 foreign ancient texts, varying from the 16th to 20th Century historical documents of the Portuguese presence in the Far East to literature of Portugal’s policy in its overseas colonies.

Title of Book / Newspaper / Magazine / Audiovisual Material：Tables of interest, at 3, 4, 4 1/2, and 5 per cent.: from L. 1 to L. 20.000, and from 1 do 365 days, in a regular progression of single days, which is an advantage not to be found in any other book of the kind: also tables, at all the above rates, from 1 to 12 months, and from 1 to 10 years, and tables, shewing the exchange on bills, or commission on goods, etc. from 1/8 to 3 per cent to which is prefixed, a table of discount on bills at a certain numbers of days or months.

Introduction：

Tables of interest, at 3, 4, 4 1/2, and 5 per cent. 為本館館藏中最古舊的英文書。在沒有計數機和電腦的年代，很多商業的計算是要靠運算表協助。本古籍的運算表又細分為利息表、佣金表、折扣表、收支表；日薪、週薪、月薪和年薪表等。本書的編著者John Thomson (1733?-1807 ) 所編的運算表自 1775年出版後，也不斷修改，雖然仍有少許絕對誤差，但相對誤差則無，準確度雖然未達百分之百，但是可信度已相當高。到1786年已修訂四次，其計算出來的平均值相當接近真值，結果更加準確，運用更加靈活。

為確保本書數據的準確性，作者John Thomson 在書名頁後面背書了他的親筆簽名，並註明：The warranted Correctness and established Character of the Author’s Books, induce him to inform the Public, that no Copy of any of them is genuine but what is signed by his own Hand, as under.
